Kyani Nyanza Primary School Development Project
Civicom Aid works to develop Kyani School, in Kaliro, Uganda, to serve over 2,500 learners annually and a clean water point to serve over 16,500 children and community members annually. AWB Seattle, with support from Civicom Aid, parents, teachers, children, and a government officer, developed a building plan for classrooms, toilets, an administration block, a rescue room, a computer lab, and a water point.
For over 22 years, more than 45,000 children in Kyani village have attended Kyani Nyanza Primary School without classrooms. They study under trees, exposed to the burning sun, heavy rain, and strong winds. These conditions make learning difficult, reduce concentration, and increase dropout rates, limiting children’s chances for a better future.
For over 22 years, the school has had no toilets. This has led to open defecation, increasing intestinal worms, poor sanitation, and unsafe learning conditions. Both boys and girls are affected, with reduced dignity and higher health risks.
Water sources in rainy and dry seasons
For over 22 years, the school has lacked clean water. Children walk over 8 kilometers daily to fetch unsafe water, increasing exposure to waterborne diseases and urinary tract infections, especially among girls. This reduces attendance and weakens learning outcomes.
